Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first television roles. The parents of her would not let her perform until she turned an adult and was worried about the impact of stress. Perry said that she was timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began playing at Northwestern University as a way to build relationships after her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, moved from Boston to New York in search of television roles. She landed small parts in television shows, such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness caused her to move to California for theater roles. She performed on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 with The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017 she had a recurring role on her own ABC drama about politics Scandal featuring her father. Also, she was cast on her role on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. Despite her connection to the family of the character, she was offered the role through an audition.
